Creative Cuisine
So, as a general rule, our food sucks, but I’m sure that surprises no one. All our meals have to be picked up from the KRAB and carried via Humvee back here and all the food is in Army marmite container (sort of an industrial-strength insulated cooler). Every breakfast is exactly the same thing: French toast, pancakes, sausages, fried potato squares, some type of egg, oatmeal or grits, and mixed cereals (thank god for people sending soy milk for my cereal or else I’d have to eat all the heavy stuff all the time!!!). Dinners are one entrée (LOTS of greasy chicken or red meat), one kind of salad (pasta, fruit, or the rare and wonderful vegetable), some kind of starch (instant potatoes, potato wedges, mac-n-cheese, etc.), a bunch of crappy desserts, one inexplicable container of iceberg lettuce (nutritionally useless), and some kind of frozen vegetable, the only vegetable we get served to us during the day. And in general, it’s all just sort of industrial, institutional, blah food. Our dinner is actually food left over from the KRAB’s lunch.
So you have to get a little creative. One oh so exciting day, I had some ramen soup, sesame sticks, and a handful of ‘Asian’ snack mix for a meal of ‘Chinese food.’ The other night I had a cold can of progresso tomato soup (let’s just call it ‘gazpacho’ style… and not that I was too tired, lazy, and hot to actually microwave it), a few pieces of ‘garlic’ bread from the chow hall, and then I found a packet of mozzarella string cheese in our refrigerator. Ah, the tastes of Italy. By the way, if you are so thoughtful as to be considering sending me a care package, please considering buying a number of Progresso soups, especially the more hearty ones with pasta in them (no red meat please). They’re great! (And thanks Lynn & Mike for the ones you already sent!)
