OCS

I originally joined the Guard with the intention of becoming an officer. ‘Lucky’ for me, we got the deployment order before I could apply and, once the order came through, applications for OCS were suspended. But I’m happy to be applying now for ’06. The application process is typical military: thorough, bureaucratic, and often nearly nebulous. The lists that I have of what is required for my application packet is enormously long, but often redundant and covering every single contingency in the world (i.e. a person with dual citizenship who needs an age waiver and didn’t pass his last PT test, etc.)

There are two options for OCS, both of which Sally and I are still mulling over. I can either leave home again and knock it all out in one 8-week shot next July and August or just drill regularly as an officer candidate for a year and then get commissioned. I originally thought I would just like to knock it out all at once but now I’m leaning toward the year-long idea, just because I don’t want to be leaving home again, even for ‘just’ two months. Plus, I would have to hold off on looking for a job before those two months,
although that would certainly give me some quality Lilli & Sally time.
